Solar panels
How solar panels are made
Solar panels (or modules) are comprised of a number of individual solar cells that are connected and encapsulated in a protective envelope behind a sheet of high-strength glass. Combined with a metal frame and equipped with connectors, solar panels can be safely installed on a home or business.
How solar panels are rated
The output of a solar panel is measured and rated in the factory under standard test conditions. For example a BP 3235 is rated at 235 watts under full sunshine. This rating is used to size systems as well.
An array of twenty BP 3235 panels on a home rooftop comprises a 4,700 watt system, commonly referred to as a 4.7 kilowatt (kW) system. Any combination is possible within the limits of local electrical codes; multi-megawatt arrays have been designed and installed worldwide.
